Atlanta City Guide Atlanta Transportation Atlanta is a very accessible city by road, rail and air. As well as Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport, which handles a large number of both domestic and international flights, Atlanta also has first class road links to many other American cities in Georgia and beyond. Atlanta by Air Hartsfield International Airport (ATL) has the distinction of being the busiest airport in the world. Hartsfield International Airport is a major American gateway that welcomes around 80 million domestic and 5 million international passengers every year. Atlanta by Car The city of Atlanta is intersected by I-20, I-75 and I-85. I-20 comes in from the west from Birmingham, Alabama and Dallas, Texas and from the east, from Augusta and Columbia in South Carolina. I-75 passes through Atlanta on its way north from Florida to Michigan. I-85 heads southwest to Montgomery, Alabama and northeast to Charlotte, North Carolina and Virginia. Atlanta is ringed by the I-285, a perimeter highway that circles the metropolitan area. Getting Around Atlanta Like most major American cities, driving in downtown Atlanta can be difficult and frustrating as traffic levels are high. A better option for the visitor is to use Atlanta's fine MARTA system; an inexpensive but effective method of getting around with free transfers to the bus network.
