In addition, Austin's closeness to Houston means that international travelers to Austin can take advantage of its two airports. Austin by Air Austin new Bergstrom International Airport, the former Bergstrom Air Force Base, welcomes both domestic and international visitors to Austin. The airport is just eight miles from the downtown area of Austin and so is often the choice of the business traveller. Austin by Car If driving from Dallas or Fort Worth, take the southbound I-35, this passes through Austin on its way to San Antonio. Getting Around Austin Austin, like all big cities, has a rush hour when traffic is extremely busy but other than that, driving through the city streets is not as taxing as in other American cities. However, having a car is not necessary for transportation as Austin has an excellent public transport service.
