I-40 is the major east-west channel, crossing North Carolina from Wilmington on the Atlantic Coast to the Great Smoky Mountains via Raleigh, Durham and Winston-Salem. From here, the I-85 links it with Charlotte. Getting Around Charlotte Charlotte is an easy town to find your way around and hiring a car is the best option, as the city tends not to have the large volumes of traffic that trouble other such cities.
